This is Callum Jones’ second campaign with Dartford, and he’s delighted to still be here…

“I enjoyed last season so much, that I just couldn’t wait to sign again for another campaign. The fans, the team, and all of the staff have been so good with me and I really enjoy it here. Being so close to promotion last year has given me extra motivation to get it done this season!”

His motivation is backed up by his statistics since his arrival, for he is an irreplaceable member of Ady Pennock’s side.

At the time of writing, Callum has registered 65 total starting appearances for the Darts and has scored 19 goals (17 in the league), not to mention the numerous assists he’s created for his teammates.

So far this season, Callum has made 18 starting appearances in all competitions and has scored four league goals. However, it’s not just his ability in front of goal that makes Callum stand out. One of his biggest contributions towards the team is his work rate, for this number seven of ours never stops running…

“I think my determination sets me apart from other players. Being able to keep running, keep working hard, and giving it all in every game is my strength. My energy and work ethic are important to the team. Goals are a big thing too of course, but I try to work as hard as I can to help the team, both defensively as well as attacking.”

He continues, “Making runs towards and behind defenders is one of my biggest strengths, as is scoring goals. I also try to make space for the other attacking players in order to give them chances to score. If we can continue working hard for each other then, hopefully, we’ll be successful this season.”

Is that his main goal for the season, to have a successful one?

“Promotion is always the aim, and to finish as high as possible in the league. Personally, I’d like to play as much as I can. I’d like to score and create as many goals as I possibly can.

“I’m positive for the remainder of the season ahead. I know we’ve had a mixed start, but I honestly think that we’ve definitely got the capability to make this season a memorable one and, hopefully, success will follow.”

As has been mentioned, Callum’s work rate is exceptional. Does he do any extra fitness work to help with that?

“I do my gym bits and recovery work in order to keep myself in the best possible place so that I can perform every week.”

He continues, “I tend to approach matchdays early, probably a bit too early! I like to be settled before a game, with no rushing around. I do my gym exercises and try to be mentally calm before I play. I also try to remain motivated because, you never know when you’ll play your last game or score your last goal. Playing football as a job is a very lucky thing to be able to do, so I never take it for granted.”

With Callum mentioning the blessing that being able to play football as a job is, is there any other reason(s) why he loves the sport?

“I love being able to give my family and friends a day out to come and watch me play. I love playing as a striker. However, as long as I’m playing, I’m happy to play anywhere on the pitch. The pressure, excitement, and feeling of scoring a goal is unlike any other feeling. It’s the best feeling in the world!”

On the flip side of course, there are challenges for football players at Dartford’s level. And, having to work outside of the beautiful game means that Callum isn’t oblivious to these challenges…

“Lack of sleep is definitely a challenge! I start work early and then finish late after training. It’s difficult to fit things in with family and friends during the season as well. But it’s worth it. I want to play at the highest level possible, and I want to enjoy playing football. It’s a short career, so I want to enjoy it as much as I can.”

Like some of his peers, Callum has also struggled through other challenging times throughout his playing career. Namely, injuries.

“Having multiple surgeries at an important time of my career was certainly a challenge. These happened early in my career when I was 18-20. Coming back from them was hard, but they have made me the player and person I am today.

“I’ve learnt to never get too high and never get too low. Things change quickly in football, as well as in life, so I always try to stay as level headed as I can.”

That’s a very wise way to be. And considering the nature of his game today, those injuries have certainly helped Callum to fit perfectly into this Dartford team. Those challenges have contributed towards him living by the advice he once received…

“I was once told to never give up! Hard work always beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.”

Does he have any advice for the younger generation?

“Don’t think too much about the playing level. The main thing is, to play as much as you can and that will give you the best chance of playing a high level of football.”

Wise advice indeed from Dartford’s number seven, who certainly makes our opponents work hard to contain him!
